How Much Firewood Do I Need?
How Firewood is Measured
Firewood is generally measured in units called “cords”, but a full cord is a LOT of wood for some urban Oklahomans, so many online firewood sellers in Oklahoma offer smaller “ricks”. The amount of wood you receive in a rick varies widely, based on several factors:
- Length of the logs (16″ vs 24″)
- Delivery service’s attention to detail while stacking (do the split logs fit together without gaps when stacking tetris-style?)
- Whether the company measures the final woodpile dimensions or not
In other words, it’s hard to know how much wood you’ll get with a rick. Our reliable local firewood service currently delivers seasoned split logs in several firewood load sizes ranging from a face cord up to a full cord. Read on to learn more about the standardized firewood sizes.
How Much Firewood is in a FULL Cord?

FULL CORD = 4 feet (H) x 8 feet (W) x 4 feet (D)
= 128 cubic feet of stacked firewood
A full cord is a well-stacked woodpile with dimensions of 4 feet x 8 feet x 4 feet. As you can see, this is a lot of wood to burn in an Oklahoma winter season, but it is still the most accurate way to measure split firewood.
For those who love burning wood in an outdoor fire pit or indoor fireplace several times a week, a full cord would be a great choice for convenient, once-yearly firewood delivery.
How Much Firewood is in a FACE Cord?

FACE CORD = 4 feet (H) x 8 feet (W) x 16 in (D)
= 1/3 of a FULL Cord = 43 cubic feet of firewood
A face cord of firewood is the same length and height as a full cord of wood, but the depth is only one log deep (the cut logs are usually 16-18 inches long). This makes the face cord resemble a full cord, but only when viewing it from the front (or face), as a full cord is 48″ (4 feet) deep. This size is ideal if you prefer building a fire on days when the high temperature is below 55 F.
Sometimes you will see someone advertising a “rick” of firewood. A “rick” describes the way the wood is stacked, NOT the amount of wood, as it doesn’t include a depth measurement. Since “rick” is not a standard measurement, it’s more accurate to talk in “cords.” Often, “rick of firewood” and “face cord of firewood” are interchangeable terms, but it’s best to check with your firewood delivery service to make sure that you receive what you paid for.
